Software & Security

On the TypeScript side, I have 10+ years of backend experience. I have also worked with React for 10+ years and used Next.js since its early days, though I have not used it much recently. For personal work, I now prefer TypeScript with bun.sh, which I adopted early.

I have experience with GraphQL, though I generally avoid it nowadays. I now prefer classic, strict REST APIs (and MCP where it fits).

For databases, I have 10+ years of MySQL experience. If I need that ecosystem, I prefer MariaDB, but nowadays I would mainly choose it for existing projects. For new projects, I prefer PostgreSQL, including for GIS work. I also prefer Redis and SQLite where they fit and scale well, which is a surprisingly high number of cases now that SQLite has matured.

I have worked extensively with PHP, including 10+ years of experience with WordPress, especially in security-focused work. I have also delivered multiple projects in Python, Java, and Lua.

I built my first Android apps for Android 4 in Java in 2012. Since then I have worked with Android on and off, but nowadays mostly for audits, security work, and personal hobby projects. I also did React Native work and earlier WebView-based framework work before React Native was a thing.

Web has always been my main focus and still is. I can move confidently between web, Android, and server platforms, and across programming languages, though I prefer TypeScript, Python, and PHP. For years, my stack was TypeScript with the Serverless Framework. I also have 10+ years of heavy Docker experience.

I also have experience with GIS and map-related work, including Leaflet, PostGIS, OpenStreetMap, and open-knowledge work on Wikipedia.

Long-Term Engineering Judgment

I have been creating software since my early teens, around 2009, with 17+ years of JavaScript and PHP experience. I have been through multiple technology cycles, from early prototypes to long-term maintenance and hardening. That gives me a practical sense for common failure modes and what to avoid. I have a good sense for what survives long-term maintenance and what tends to break down. I have made nearly every mistake myself at some point. I follow a minimalist approach with a strong focus on maintainability, security, and privacy.

Linux, Servers & Qubes OS

I have used Linux as my daily driver for about as long as I have been programming, since around 2009. Before Qubes OS became my main daily driver, that mainly meant Kubuntu. I also have 10+ years of experience managing and hardening Linux servers. For servers, these days I prefer Alpine Linux, but I am also experienced with Debian and Ubuntu.

I have used Qubes OS since around 2017, and since 2022 it has been my main daily driver. I can customize it deeply and have built a lot of custom tooling for it.

Manufacturing & Textiles

I also ran a made-to-measure curtain manufacturing company with four employees for a decade, including my own textile editor business and an online retail operation. The manufacturing side was tightly connected to self-built software tools. The whole operation was intertwined, connected, and tracked through those tools. Long before AI chatbots became mainstream, I used Viber and Telegram bots for the manufacturing company. Workers chatted with the bots and ran commands through them to receive instructions, manage their workload, and coordinate day-to-day tasks themselves. I programmed sewing machines and built custom modifications for them myself. Besides that, I ran three different side businesses in two countries over several years that were, in practice, logistics work. I know how to manage stressful, time-sensitive environments, but I prefer not to work that way anymore.

What I'm Open To

I am open to high-impact work where my background can save time, reduce risk, or connect things that are usually hard to connect. That is especially true around IT security, JavaScript/PHP systems, Linux/Qubes OS, and the overlap between software, home textiles, sewing machines, and manufacturing.

That also includes serious Qubes OS-related requests and niche cases where software overlaps with home textiles, sewing machines, including machine programming and custom machine modifications, or manufacturing in general.

Most of my time is already tied up in my own projects, and I generally prefer working for myself. I am not looking for routine client work or the daily grind.
